STEP 5: PAINTING THE LAYOUT AND CLEANUP:
First coat. Remove all the tape on the side you're painting!!! I used
Hunter Green 'CoverRight' exterior latex, purchased at OSH. A quart can
carried me through two terrain boards with some touch-up paint to spare.
It's still damp here, and shiny, but again you can really see how the
drywall sanding has mellowed the contours. I reapplied the tape to the top
after the paint was dry before turning it over. This constant peeling and
resticking of tape may peel up some flecks of paint here and there but you
can touch them up later. Remember the tape doesn't have to be mashed down
hard to the foam, just barely hanging on is fine, so long as it holds the
bluefoam sections tight enough against each other that paint won't get
between them and stick them to each other (if this happens, use
an x-acto to razor them apart).
Second coat. The green is now much deeper and more amiable to a terrain
look. I used three coats total, being sure to coat top and bottom of each
section so the drying latex didn't warp the bluefoam in one direction or
another and make the sections not match up.
And the third coat...Get the sides and edges of the sections as well, so
that lines of blue won't show between them. If you get droplets of paint
on the edges of the sections that prevent the sections fitting together
again well, use the drywall sanding mesh to carefully re-flatten that part
of that edge, sanding and test-fitting constantly until you get
the fit you need.
